column widths

I'm using Excel 2000.

I use FORMAT/COLUMN/AUTOFIT to adjust the width of the
column to fit the cell contents. I then save and close the
worksheet.

When I open the worksheet again, the columns have reverted
to their original widths.

Why aren't the column-widths being retained?

I've seen posts that describe this problem with xl97, but never with xl2k.

Are you sure you're saving the file as a .xls ("Microsoft Excel Workbook
(*.xls)" and not something else--like a "CSV (Comma delimited)(*.csv)" file?

And you don't have any macros running to adjust column widths when you open the
workbook, right???

The suggestion for xl97 is to make sure you're running the latest service
release.

I don't know if that'll help you with xl2k, though.

You may want to post the version of excel that you're using:

Help|about MS Excel
will show the nitty gritty.
