Column widths aren't set in either cm or pixels. A column width of (say) 8
just means that, on average, 8 of the numeric characters in the default font
will fit the column. How wide such a column appears on the screen will
depend on the monitor, video card, display settings, zoom, etc. How wide it
appears on a printout will depend on the printer, printer driver, page
setup, etc.
