column headings

Excel 2003 changed column headings to a number vice letter. I want to sum
different cells in a column. Microsoft Office Online gives examples using
the old letter fomat (e.g., B2:B3). So, how do I sum different cells using
column and row reference points that both now use numbers? Excel 2003
automatically converted my old formulas to formulas or reference points I
can't understand. Thanks.

goto 'tools - Options - General' and uncheck 'R1C1 reference style'
