Color use on Web pages

I need some help. I'm rebuilding our website for my boss. I'm new at this,
but have been reading a lot and understand the basics of color use and such
on web pages. My problem is in explaining this to my boss. He likes things
to "stand out" on the page and thus would like to use multiple colors of text
on one page. He also seems to pick the brightest, most obnoxious colors
possible, not worrying about whether the colors compliment each other or
completely clash. Does anyone know of any really good resources/articles
that I could share with him to give him a general idea of "what not to do on
a website" regarding colors? (or, am I completely wrong and shouldn't worry
about using the brightest colors that clash in various places throughout
text?)

Ha..arguing with the boss or the client on colors..my favorite topic! I've given up arguing..now I just design it the way they want it. Then splash it on the screen and ask for opinions...it's usually pretty fun that way :-)

the general rule of thumb is to use "web safe" colours - 216 of the most likely
colours that are going to look OK on a majority of systems - i.e. some colours
look very different on different computers with different video cards, monitors
etc even different between say Macs and PC's.

Andrew -- the practice of using web safe colors became obsolete
several years ago. Most computers are now sold with 32 bit graphics
adapters and the vendors configure the machine to use 'Highest' color
quality before shipping to retailers.

Yep - I agree with Clinton on this one. Web safe colors are so... 1990's.

How about AOL colors?

Seems to work OK, but what is it that I am missing here? Does AOL have a
set of proprietary colors?

It's probably a color version of AOL keywords. Pablum for the pedestrians.

I believe it does, or used to.
