color settings

If this posts twice I am sorry but I have not seen it show up. I just reinstalled Windows XP and took the display to Classic View and I can only get 8 bit color. I even tried taking it back to XP but to no avail. ANy ideas how I can get all the options like I had before. It will only give me 1200 X ... as well. As you can tell I am no computer genius. When I go to monitor, it says default monitor and will not even let me into the properties.
