Color Profiles

Can someone tell me what these Color Profiles are for? I'm guessing that
they only work on CRT monitors and not LCD. I'm using an LCD and see no
display changes at all.

I have six or eight profiles here and tried to use a few, but I don't see
any change .

You'd only need worry about these if you do any digital photo(or video)
editing and printing. The idea is to have all of your devices(capture via
digicam, editing software, monitor, and printer) coincide with the color
range(gamut) they are using. I find that Kodak's ProPhoto profile is very
good. There are software monitor calibrators out there to adjust yours to
correct intensity, contrast, etc. But hardware calibrators like Spyder are
supposedly the best way to go if you're really gonna get into it. You
should probably just load the sRGB color profile and be done with it.

Most crt's and lcd's come with their own profiles, and so it should be
listed/entered as the default color profile for the monitor. Typically
it is used by color managed applications like, for example, Adobe
Photoshop products. Most printers also have their own profiles or
have multiple profiles for the different paper/ink combinations that
they support. Even many scanners have their own profiles.

Most of the time if you run the software from the peripheral product
you are installing the proper color profile will also be installed for
that device.

You can also make your own monitor and/or profiles by using 3rd party
hardware and/or software products. Here is a free profile generator
that is pretty good and fun to play around with:
