some items in some of my folders are in black text and some are in blue text.

why and can I change them to all one color?

Blue denotes compressed, done by Disk Cleanup Wizard.

To "Decompress", Right click the file/folder, take Properties.
When the details box opens, click the Advanced button and
de-select or untic the option box "Compress contents to save
space" then Apply.

If you want all items to show up with black text, do the
following:
Go to Control Panel and double click Folder Options.
In Folder Options, click on the View tab.
In the Advanced Settings box, scroll down to "Show encrypted or
compressed NTFS files in color".
Remove the check mark from the box next to this entry and click
OK.

Good luck

Thank you for your help

If a file is compressed (or not) effect its ability to be uploaded into a
website?
For example, a resume or cover letter upload to a potential employer? I'm
recently getting an eror trying to do so.
Are there advantages or disadvantages to compressing files other than simply
disk space?

Thanks

By design, WinXP automatically compresses files that do not get
used frequently, and, if you've left the default settings intact,
displays those file names in blue.

If you wish to change this behavior, in Windows Explorer, click
Tools > Folder Options > View > Advanced settings: Show encrypted or
compressed NTFS files in color.

I have no idea whether the compression state of a file would be
causing the problems you're having with uploading your resume.

You might want to post that question on the Internet Explorer
newsgroup. Include details such as the web site where you're
experiencing these problems as well as the complete error
message you receive when you can't upload your file.

FYI, the major advantage of file compression is as you state,
it saves space. The biggest disadvantage of file compression is
that it increases file access time. The file must first be
decompressed when it's opened and recompressed when it's
closed.

Good luck
