Collapsing Font Issue

For quite some time now we've had many user machines (using versions of
Office from 2000 to 2003) exhibit an intermittent issue with Times New Roman
where all type was overlapped at the left margin both in on-screen display
and in printed form.

Initially, the problem seemed to be only related to Times New Roman, but
lately we've seen the same issue in other fonts we've used as substitutes as
well (Georgia and Book Antiqua). It is becoming increasingly annoying.

I've Googled my face blue and found nothing but a few scattered posts on
this subject with no resolution.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and is there a resolution?
Changing to yet another different font is not an option. We're a law firm
and the court rules specifically allow only certain fonts.

I'm surprised you've found only a few posts on the subject, though it's true
that it's difficult to find the right search terms since users describe the
problem so variously. A response by Office MVP Bob Buckland that's often
cited can be found (among other places) at
http://help.lockergnome.com/office/text-pushed-column-Times-Roman-Font-ftopict694555.html.
If you search Google Groups for "squished text Word," you'll find many
others.

Thanks, Suzanne. Obviously, I didn't have the "correct" search terms. I'll
check the link you cited.

"Squished" does seem to be a favorite, but other users have used
"collapsed," "overlapping," and other words. It's a mysterious problem, and
the language/description difficulty doesn't help.
