.cmd file and Chkdsk

B

Bill

Ok let me try this again since my original post has been up 2 days with no
response at all...........

Ok I have 2 questions I hope someone can answer for me...... First if I run
chkdsk without the /f parameter from a command prompt it reports that there
are problems with the file system and to run chkdsk with the /f parameter to
fix. I do this and select Y to run at next reboot. I repeat this process a
total of 3 times. The first 2 times, there were problems fixed with /f, run
again from within windows without /f and it still reports errors. The 3rd
time it reports no problems found with /f but without /f within Windows
still reports problems. What gives? Is this a known issue that there is or
will be a fix for? Should I be concerned? Running XP Pro fully updated, and
have included a Belarc report in this post.

Second question: I have created a .cmd file to try to eliminate some typing
when running a command from cmd. When I run this file the command trys to
execute numerous times (constantly until I close the command prompt) I know
I'm missing something here, but not sure what. As an example of one of the
commands I'm attempting to run with this file is rasdial. I know what syntax
to use for this command but not sure how to get this to run only once as if
I had typed this directly into a command prompt. Maybe someone could point
me in the right direction? I would appreciate any help I
could get. TIA

You may have bad blocks developing on the disk surface. Use chkdsk /r
which does a surface scan, if it finds bad blocks it tries to copy any
data from them to another bock then mark the bad block as unusable. If
there are a lot or are recurring yor disk may be headed for the grave,
so backup your data.

On the .cmd problem if you post the contents of the .cmd file here
someone may be able to help with it.

Bill

thanks for the response Steve. Are there any other possible reasons for the
chkdsk problem? I t really wouldn't be that big of a deal as I have 2 hared
drives, but the one that this issue is occuring with is my system volume,
and I really don't want a fresh or repaired installation of XP right now,
I'm trying to hold off until SP2 is released so I can have it on a fresh
install to minimize possible problems, same as I did with SP1 and never had
any of the headaches a lot of people had with it. If that's the only reason,
cool, but I would like to explore other options if possible.

On the .cmd file, it doesn't matter what command it is, it does it with any
I place into the file. Basically what I've done is just type into the file
what I would type directly into a command line interface, but when running
the file you can see a command window open and the command scroll down the
window endlessly until I manually close the window or press the pause/break
key. I know I'm probably not using the correct syntax to get commands to run
properly this way. An example would be using the rasdial command. I would
type in rasdial <connection name> <username> <password> and the connection
would be dialed and executed. But if I use the .cmd file to execute this
what I typed in scrolls endlessly in the command window with no command
executed. Any help? TIA

Steve Nielsen said:
You may have bad blocks developing on the disk surface. Use chkdsk /r
which does a surface scan, if it finds bad blocks it tries to copy any
data from them to another bock then mark the bad block as unusable. If
there are a lot or are recurring yor disk may be headed for the grave,
so backup your data.

On the .cmd problem if you post the contents of the .cmd file here
someone may be able to help with it.

Steve

I would appreciate any help I
could get. TIA

Yes, there are hardware problems that could be causing repeated file
system errors. Loose/bad cables, weak/failing power supply, mainboard
not healthy, etc. I'd still run chkdsk /r and backup your data. Just
because a drive develops bad blocks deoesn't mean absolute impending
doom but there is certainly a chance of it. I've seen new drives with
bad blocks, fix the bad blocks and they work fine for years.

I can't help you with the .cmd problem much as I'm not familiar with the
rasdial command and why it would work typed on the command line and not
in a .cmd file. .cmd processes are the same as batch (.bat) processes
and I've had my share of troubles with that and wouldn't want to steer
you into a ditch. Hopefully someone who knows will pipe up on that.

Steve
thanks for the response Steve.

But if I use the .cmd file to execute this
what I typed in scrolls endlessly in the command window with no command
executed. Any help?

Ok I have 2 questions I hope someone can answer for me...... First if I run

There was a bug in chkdsk that would give erroneous reports of errors
like this. I think it got fixed in XP SP1 - certainly I have not seen
it since

I don't understand it either. Everytime I run chkdsk is says there are
minor inconsistencies on the disk and cleans them up--the next time I run it
says the same thing with the same inconsistencies. They always relate to
security settings--why does it put the incorrect settings back if it knows
that they are incorrect?? How do you ever get this fixed?

David Candy

Ah, der, they're not errors. Do they say they're errors.

If you actually try posting full details you get help quicker.

Whatever the bug was, i think I have it....I even ran chkdsk /r last night
per Steve's recommendation and here were the results of that:

There are no apparent bad sectors on my disk as the SMART status reads all
is well also. The same thing still happens when I run chkdsk as prevoiuosly
stated though. I guess there's probably no real problem, as I don't really
have any problems with my system outside of occasional sluggish performance
that's fixed with a quick reboot, and windows explorer crashing frequently
w/o warning. I've read that's a known issue though so I'm not too much
worried about it.

Thanks for the help though.

ok, I understand that, however no matter how many times I run chkdsk /f or/r
if I run just plain ol' chkdsk in read-only mode it always says "Correcting
errors in the Volume Bitmap" "Windows found problems with the file system"
"Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct them". I do this and go
through the same loop over and over again. Sometimes the /f finds and fixes
problems and sometimes it finds none but NO MATTER WHAT read-only mode
always finds problems.

Ok I have 2 questions I hope someone can answer for me...... First if I run
chkdsk without the /f parameter from a command prompt it reports that there
are problems with the file system and to run chkdsk with the /f
parameter
to
fix. I do this and select Y to run at next reboot. I repeat this
process
a
total of 3 times. The first 2 times, there were problems fixed with /f, run
again from within windows without /f and it still reports errors. The 3rd
time it reports no problems found with /f but without /f within Windows
still reports problems. What gives? Is this a known issue that there is or
will be a fix for?

There was a bug in chkdsk that would give erroneous reports of errors
like this. I think it got fixed in XP SP1 - certainly I have not seen
it since
