For starters, enable your firewall (or download a free one, such as
Zonealarm, and install it.)

For XP's firewall...
Start-settings-network connections
Right click, properties.
Advanced
Add checkmark in "Protect my computer...."

If you have to ask if your copy of XP is 32 or 64 bit, it's 32.
