With Outlook 2003 I have a person folder which is password potected. Having
opened it using my password I then wanted to close it again so I right
clicked on my personal folder and used the "close mailbox" comand. This then
displayed my folder as Mailbox - peter. I cannot re-open it. I am not asked
for a password, their are no "open folder" commarnds etc.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks

Once disconnected you must restart Outlook to reconnect the same pst-file.
Reconnecting can be done via File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...

File>Open>Outlook Data File to reopen it.
