Clicking Windows On Taskbar Brings Other Windows To Front

When I click on a button on the taskbar to bring a window to the front, often
times other windows will come up as the second window back.

For instance, if I have www.microsoft.com open in a browser window,
wired.com in another, an IM and a buddy list.... I could be reading Wired,
click to bring the IM to the front, and the IM would come to the front, but
the microsoft webpage would come up behind it, replacing Wired as the second
window back.

This occurs with any window that is on the taskbar at any given time and
seems to happen at random. Programs minimized to the system tray are not
affected.

Is this a known bug? Is there any way to fix this issue? Any advice would be
appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello Jason,
Which is it? Random or after you click to come to front? A bit of
advice Jason. Try not to have so many programs open at once. i work in the
computer security business and that is a good way to invite trouble. If you
hit the right app. in task mang. that window should come to front. Unless too
many open programs are hindering it. At least minimize the programs. Try
running with a few less programs open. Your Pc will thank you for it. Never
leave am IM open if you are not reading it. Im is a security tech's
nightmare. Be careful and patch up!!
Best of luck, let me know if things improve or not

some programs have a bug that messes up the z-order, the order of the
windows-stack. it's rare, but I've seen it, and it can cause this issue.
often it's a program that has a "keep on top" option, or one that has a
"full screen" mode.

does the problem occur right after a reboot, or after running other
programs?

do you use Irfanview? upgrade it to latest version, 3.95.

After I click on a button on the taskbar to bring it to the front, THEN it
randomly changes the second window back, even though the correct window comes
to front.

I do typically run with as many as 7+ windows on the taskbar at a time
(seldom IMs), but it still seems to me that this should not be an issue; just
a simple (albeit annoying) bug.

A reboot will solve the problem for a while, so I assume that it must be
related to some piece of software that I am running. I will just experiment.

Thanks for your advice.

The issue occurs after a number of programs are open and running. A reboot
will solve the issue for a while, but if the computer is left running for
long periods of time, it tends to come back.

I run a fair number of programs in the system tray, so if the issue occurs
because of programs with the "full screen" or "stay on top" function, it is
likely that it would also occur due to programs that will "minimize to system
tray".

Is there some way to access that Z-Order in the Windows Stack while Windows
is running? Is it a temporary directory or registry key somewhere?

And I am afraid that I do no know what Irfanview is...

Thank you for the advice though.. I will experiment with some of my software
and see if I can pinpoint the issue.

Just a thought Jason,
Do you see any processes running in task mang. that you don't
know what they are? You might try looking at task mang. in safty mode while
jotting down the list. Then reboot and look at the same list again before you
bring up ypur programs. If a process starts that is not on your list, chances
are that is the bug you suspected. You seem to have a handle on the issue
and you talk liike a tech. Always room for one more. How about MCDST for
starters?? Let us know how you are doing

Well, I am a technician part time for a university... but it never hurts to
discuss things with others.

I am quite familiar with all of my processes. Working for a university has
interested me greatly in how spyware works and how to remove it... and I have
had a lot of opportunities to test theories since it is such a prevelant
problem. I know that nothing strange is running at boot.

I think, most likely, some of the software that I have running concurrently
is conflicting.

I appreciate your time and help though. Thank you.
