clearing search engine message window

Whenever we enter info into the search engine query
window, up to 10 previously entered search requests pop
up. I want to be able to clear that history. How do I
do that. On my iMac toolbar for internet explorer there
is a "preferences" section where I can clear the history
for my searches. But on my pc, I can't find
a "preferences" list on the toolbar.
