clearing readonly on folders and files

In the file properties dialog, accessed by the right click menu on a file or
folder, the general tab, there is a check box labeled "read only". My
understanding is that when checked, this says the file or folder contents are
read only and may not be written to. I have files and folders in which this
check box is not checked, but is green. When I clear it, then save, it
doesn't stay cleared. When I return to view this property, the check box is
turned green again. I have gone from the top to the bottom of the folder
tree attempting to get this property cleared so I can write to the
folders/save files. All to no avail. How do I get this property cleared once
and for all?

thanks,

Folders will be marked Read Only. It doesn't matter. You can still write
to the files. Try it.

The read-only checkbox is confusing to most. Better to add the 'Attributes' column to the detail
view.
