Clearing File Associations in Vista

I have associated a file extension with notepad by accident. (I fogot to
clear the check box when I chose to use "Open With"). Now it seems the file
extension is permanantly assoicated with notepad. I have found the file
association list in control panel but it only allow you to change to another
program. I have searched the registry for the specific file extension but
the search came up empty.

Does anyone know how to cancel a file association in Windows Vista? Or has
Microsoft in their infinite wisdom felt there is no longer a need for this?

Just find the file you want to change, right click on it, choose Open with,
pick the correct program and be sure to check Always use this to open..."

Mary, If I wanted to CHANGE the file association that would work. I'm
tyring to CLEAR all associations not change one.

The file is an RP0 extension. It's part of my helpdesk asset manager
software and it should not have any file association to it. That's why I
simply want to clear the association with notepad.

It appears the function to remove a file type has been removed from Vista.
However, I found a reference to a tool that would appear to allow you to
delete a file type. Go to the following link and scroll to method 3. If it
interests you, a link to the site where it is located and more information

You cannot remove file associations from MS file because that is the way MS
finds and open files however you can change the association to one of the
applications on your computer or browse the net for a program to use.

So just open the file which you wrongly associated and change it to the
correct program. If you do not even know what the file was then right click
the file and chose properties' It may give you info.

You did check the very beginning list in HKEY CLASSES ROOT? That seems to be
a list of all extensions and their associated program.

In a cmd prompt screen, type assoc /? I think you can unassociate this way
according to the help info.

.ext Specifies the file extension to associate the file type with

Type ASSOC without parameters to display the current file associations.
If ASSOC is invoked with just a file extension, it displays the current
file association for that file extension. Specify nothing for the file
type and the command will delete the association for the file extension.

Open RegEdit, find the HKEY CLASSES ROOT section. Scroll down to the file
extension you want to clear, it should be listed as a Folder. Simply select
it and delete it from the Registry, or select it and in the right hand pane
select the 'Default' entry and delete it.
