am thinking of buying below as a budget gamer, but is the move and
performance increase worth $700?

Am moving from a
*** 3.0g P4 478 on a
*** P4S800-MX with
*** AGP 256 ATI 9250,
*** 512 vdata

to

*** INTEL PENTIUM 4 Processor 630 LGA775 3.0Ghz 64bit 2MB L2-Cache
800FSB
*** ALBATRON PX915SLI Intel 915PL/ICH6 Chipset 2 x PCI Express 16x
*** DDR400 Dual Channel USB LAN SOUND
*** ALBATRON Nvidia 6600GT 128meg DDR Memory DVI and HDTV Out Model
PC6600GT *** 1g of matched ram

We would be happy to stay with the first cpu but i cant seem to find a
afforable mobo with 478 , gli and dual-ram...

What's gli?

It's a cheaper, much lower performance version of SLI, as you don't need to
support two full X16 expansion slots. Original purpose was so that you
could use two video cards to drive four monitors. It wasn't a performance
enhancement though, as one of the PCI-Express slots is crippled. That is,
one of the two video cards is running off of a crippled expansion slot.
There's some rumors of drivers coming out to use the 2nd video card in kind
of an SLI mode, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to
appen. -Dave

You could get yourself a 7800GS AGP, another stick of 512MB RAM,
and be happy. Just keep using your current motherboard.
No sense giving Intel money for nothing.

Or hold on a bit, and wait until Conroe is shipping.

hi ppl, tx for replys....

that 7800 is real nice but i think im going to 6600gt's pci,s ....
ultimatly i can see a 1k gpu SLI, twice the existing ram, much bigger
caches, much faster busses, dual-ram, ddr2, PCIe and one 128 SLI card
installed from spending the same as what your suggesting. i belive this
will last me untill I a can afford p4 4's...

I WAS in the middle of day-dreaming about my first AMD purchase when I
discover our "machine A", a 3.0gP4 478 (see above) HAS the worst case
of dust I have ever seen. The dust had formed 15mm "funnells" from the
liver shaped holes of the fan-cover.iT was running at twice the
temperture (82 degres) and was occasionally shuting down when room temp
got heated with me yellin' at my teens about the state of it... It also
couldnt play BF2 at the time but I have since whipped all back into
shape.

Overall, I am impressed enough with the machine and thought I'd keep it
and buy a AMD for the kids. They can make up the differance in pocket
money....

SO with the pocket money conbined we think we can get into twice the
existing ram, much bigger caches, much faster busses, SLI, dual-ram,
ddr2, PCIex and one 128 SLI card installed. Also allowing a further
ugrade path untill p4 4's are affordable....

Also...
the existring AGP card only has a engine speed of 200mhz whereas most
any PCIe junk could outperform the AGP card presently in "machine
a"....

yep - rumor is alive and well here too... but surely it will step the
engine speed back of the fastest card, de-tune the cas and knock the
polish off the finer systems?

holding your breath with that sinking feeling....arghhh........

J

JAD

the sad part about all this is that you will never really feel the
difference...except in your wallet
if you were throttling the CPU cause of heat, thats your problem ...not
intel not the lack of GLI SLI (ancient tech BTW), or the lack of ram.

D

dawg

Doesn't work that way.Two 6600 GT's aren't faster than one 6800
Ultra. So,they'd be even slower than a 7800GS. But it's almost always better
to modernize. The only real performance gain from your old to your proposed
new rig will come from the video card.

hmmm, darn it...

i was thinking the sli would give me a nicely "tuned" system either
tho' it may have lacked outright grunt...

I juus dont have enough readies....

OK... I am going to find the best vid card I can for my $'s then go
with that..

pfft target $200au, not even worth the pain but its xercise anyway...
.... ho

and I have to buy another machine anyway....

i like the 2mb cache on the P4 778 but have read it wont help gaming
much untill the p4 4's as the 3.0 cpu is saturated anyway..

what a nitemare....

A nightmare is trying to read your posts. Is it ghetto or ebonics?

I cant work out wether your post masochist or sadist... Either way, do
you often go around admitting in public you prefer talking to girls in
pretty pink skirts or do you just look to make it worse...

maybe your a snobby junior anthropologist who has an interest in
computers that suddennly realised the price range I am talking is way
below the effort of reading the post - deary me...

or maybe you would have some sensitivity and appreciate that the topic
is incredably FKN difficult (if ya' not rich) and tends to make one
anxsious, spell and behave bad.... but maybe youv'e realised that!

Huh? Who or what are you replying to? Without including the quote we
have no idea who you are talking to. Take off the training wheels and
learn how to post on Usenet. And speak English, geeze.
