CleanMgr hangs

J

JOel

When I invoke the W2k disk cleanup utility, it seems to
search the hard drive for a few minutes as it should...
but then it hangs, never reporting the size of the files
to be cleaned or giving me the opportunity to kill them.
But Task Mgr shows the CLeanmgr process to be still
running and using most of my system resources.

How do I restore disk cleanup to normal function?
Background: I recently installed SP4 (which cured other
problems, incidentally).

thnx

Hi JOel,

Service Pack 4 adds new files to your system. For more information see the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:

KB271484 - Files and Folders Are Added to Your System After Service Pack Is Installed
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=271484

As such, Disk Cleanup now has more files to work with. Some people posting to the
microsoft.public.* newsgroups have reported that Disk Cleanup's "Compressing Old
Files" stage can take overnight, so you may want to leave Disk Cleanup running that
long (especially since you recently added so many new files).

Some people post that Disk Cleanup stops responding while compressing old files. The
following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article explains a workaround that, if
implemented, removes the option to Compress Old Files (although written for Windows
XP, the resolution also works for Windows 2000):

KB812248 - Disk Cleanup Tool Stops Responding While Compressing Old Files
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=812248

And for a detailed description of each task that the Disk Cleanup Wizard performs see
the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:

KB253597 - Automating Disk Cleanup Tool in Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=253597
