I tried running the Cleanup wizard by Run... and entering CLEANMGR. It
ran fine, but afterward I notice there is still a ton of crap left in
the folder C:\WINDOWS\TEMP.

Why does CLEANMGR ignore that folder?

Can I safely delete everything in C:\WINDOWS\TEMP?

Alter the "LastAccess" value for cleaning the Temporary files using Disk
Cleanup utility:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/cleantemp.htm

Also, the files which are in use by the Operating System, or by 3rd party
applications, cannot be deleted.

thats as good tip!

I wonder why, it is defaulted to 7 days? It doesnt seem to be realistic to
not
have it at 0 days, especially if it is used by trojans.

How about those other registry entries under that folder. Why would I
want 7 days of memory dmps, and the others as well.

Any clues, myknoweldgiable friend?

Hi databaseben,

Yes. I agree that 0 or 1 would be ideal values for %Temp% cleanup.

For Memory Dump files, it looks like the default value is 30 (days), which
IMO can be changed to 5 or 7 (days). Complete Memory dumps occupy massive
space on the disk.

Hi Steven,

Files in use by programs running in the background, can't be deleted.

I know that.
But there were even folders in there that were two YEARS old. Including
stuff I recognized from programs I had uninstalled a long time ago.

CLEANMGR just doesn't seem to be very thorough, is all.

Hi Steven,

Try this program, TuneUp Utilities 2006 which you can download a 30-Trial from: http://www.tune-up.com/ Use it to clean the Registry first, then use its Tuneup Disk Cleaner, then rerun the TuneUp Registry Cleaner and see what happens.

yeh, but they should have been installed in the
program files folder. Maybe thats why it couldn't
be flushed.

As a rule of thumb:
anything going to a temp folder is a file with a temporary
status/lifespan.

Maybe what you could do is to create a desktop shortcut
the the temp folder so that you can monitor it.

In the interim
it would be suggestiable to move those legit folders out of there
or reinstall the original software to the program folders...
