Cleaning up .tmp files

W

Walter E.

I seem to have a large number of .tmp files on my computer. Most of them can
be deleted manually but some of them will not delete and these usually they
show the current date.

There must be a better way of getting rid of unneeded files like .tmp, .old,
..bak and .chk.

Is there a small, free proggie that will do the job?

Thanks

They are probably in use. Windows won't let you delete open
files.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you delete your temp files
regularly, these will get deleted next time.

Some programs will create temp files while they are running, and those can not be deleted. I think the time spent chasing down all the possible temp files is not worth the small amount of hard drive space they consume. If you want to delete everything possible in the Windows Temp folder, there are utilities to do that automatically. There is a script on my VBScript page that will do that job nicely with minimum overhead. Run it from the Startup folder to clean the Temp folder at each boot.

The temp files you can't delete are most likely in use. If you reboot or
close the service related to the temp file you can delete it.
Try booting into safe mode

I'm very fond of Empty Temp Folders, have it configured to delete my
temporary internet files with each reboot. It will identify inactive
shortcuts, let you save some cookies or history entries while deleting
the rest, and there's the .tmp, .old etc. file thing. That being said,
for the most part these items aren't doing any harm (other than the
TIFs, if allowed to accumulate).
