How do I clean up my hard drive,
I have a 35 gig HD and after uninstalling all the
programs and files I do not use I still have over
23 gig used.
There is no way I have 23 gig of software installed.
How can I clean up the rest, I have tried Nortons etc
but did not get anywhere.

please advise

Hi Daniel

Try the Defragmenter program and also Disk Cleanup. How much disk space had
you used before you began uninstalling programs?

Dan -
Get the very useful program PowerDesk Pro 5 from vcom...
First, it's a much better explorer than Windows Explorer,
and it also has a "Size Manager" which will quickly show
you where BIG chunks are.
Also, have you looked at how much space your old (and
worthless) System Restore Points use up. For you it's
probably over 3 gigs. Get rid of all but the last one.

Hi, Daniel.

Have you emptied your Recycle Bin? Including the Norton Protected Files?
"Deleted" files still in the bin are still taking up space on the HD.

There are some files that don't show up normally in directories, but they
should total only a couple of GB. These include hiberfil.sys (if you use
hibernation), the page file (if it's on this volume), and most of WinXP's
own files in the \Windows folder (and subfolders).

I read you suggestion with interest. My system has many restore dates that
are in bold. You suggest getting rid of all but the last one. I think this
is a great idea but I have not found the means to do this.

my computer/your disk C/properties/clean up/then on top more options .Click
and see sytem restore on the last line.
You can save a lot of space doing it.

Hi Will

I run these utilities often, I had 28 gig of space used up, thing is I
uninstalled at least
eight gig of games etc and only got back five gig.

Anyway I have looked at the posts here and done the recommended things and
got back another two, thanks to everyone for their input.

Hi Daniel

Glad you regained some space. Some of these uninstall routines do not get
rid of *all* the files and Registry entries that are installed.
