clean install with Vista upgrade and original XP CD?

My ageing Thinkpad with XP Pro died so I've decided to build a new custom
desktop from scratch. Can I install Vista Ultimate upgrade directly without
having to install XP first? I would like to have a clean install of Vista,
not an upgrade. Also since XP Pro license was activated on the Thinkpad, do I
need to call MS and get another activation key??

You would have to install Windows XP, then upgrade
to Vista Ultimate.

Technically, possibly. Legitimately, no. By your own admission,
you have an OEM license for WinXP that is *permanently* bound to the
ThinkPad. An OEM license must be sold with a piece of hardware
(normally a motherboard or hard drive, if not an entire PC) and is
_permanently_ bound to the first PC on which it's installed. An OEM
license, once installed, is not legally transferable to another computer
under _any_ circumstances. You cannot legitimately use the THinkPad's
OEM WinXP license to justify the use of a Vista Upgrade license on a
different computer.

To attempt to do so would be the equivalent of your telling the
world that your given word or your signature on a contract is completely
without value, never to be trusted.

Thanks for that info. Turns out I'm eligible for the full OEM version of
Vista Ultimate which costs less than the retails version since I'm building
the hardware ;)

You should be able to do a clean install with the Vista DVD. Here's a
tutorial on how to do that:

I hope this helps.

Hi Bruce

Just to clarify I do not have an OEM license for XP. It's a full legitimate
retail license. I was describing the fact that as a system builder I could
purchase and install an OEM version of Vista on a new desktop I'm cobbling
together. There is no way I could get an OEM license for the Thinkpad, as I
didn't build it ;)
