class not registered?

I put this question to the newsgroup for videos but got no reply. I am
running win 98 and have the WMP ver 9 and also Irfanview plug in. Neither
can play music vids or most of them at least. Irfanview searches for a codec
and WMP says class not registered. What is the point of WMP ver9 when it
can't play stuff? In the past I had Media Player Classic but had to get rid
of it as it kept causing the blue screen. What must I do to be able to see
these vids?. Do I need a codec?. Why cant a codec be found and auto
downloaded if that is what I need?

microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player
microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player.plugins
microsoft.public.windowsmedia.encoder
microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player.visualizations
microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player.web

Maybe Google for "class not registered".

Try using Mplayer or Mplayer2 that comes with 98. It will at least give you
the error code and codec that it is searching for. I have never found an
answer to the "Class Not Registered" question though.
