Circular Boot Problem

Running XP on a very fast desktop with a gig of memory. Everything was
running fine yesterday when I properly shut down the system to reboot. Now
when it powers up the normal color windows logo appears then the F8 screen
appears.

Regardless of which option I then select, (Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Prompt,
Safe Mode with Nuts, etc.) and I have selected them ALL at least 3 times
each, the boot process begins and then quickly cycles down and the whole
process immediately begins to repeat itself.

I am the ONLY one in the house who touches the computers---NOTHING was
changed or added. This SAME thing happened on Grandma's computer (yes, Granny
has a laptop) a couple weeks back and I ended up re-installing the OS for
lack of a better idea.

What's going on and how do I remedy this short of re-installing the OS??

what you try it to make
is a handy emergency boot disk from
a functinal pc or your granny's turbo laptop.
before you burn it make sure comannds
like fixboot and fixmbr and ntldr and
ntdetect.com
these can then be copied from the emergency
disk to the harddrive.

i think that maybe running fixboot
might help you out here.

another option is that instead of reinstalling
an o.s., simply repair it with the "windows
repair" feature from the windows setup cd...

hmm.... my grammar needs
a little improving - sorry. Here
is a clearer version:

Why not try and make a handy
emergency boot disk from a functional
pc or your grandmothers laptop computer.

Before you burn an emergency boot disk(s)
make sure that it has files called fixboot, fixmbr
ntdlr and ntdetect.com. These can be
copied over to the emergency disk before
the burn.

Then these files can be transferred over onto
the unfunctional pc. Fixboot and fixmbr are
the exectuable ones, the others are used
by the o.s. at boot time.

It the above doesn't work then
a repair windows should correct
disfunctional issues in your o.s.

Again, sorry for rushing through
my prior post.

use a good pc with xp installed

format a floppy disk

copy the following files to the floppy (note: xp only)

these files are located in C:\ or yourdriveletter:\

Boot.ini
NTDETECT.COM
ntldr

enter the bios and set first boot device to floppy - save to bios then
exit

make sure your floppy disk is inserted in A drive

This will boot your system

once booted - open windows explorer hilight C:\ or yourdriveletter:\

copy and paste the files from the floppy to C:\

a dialog box will display > select yes to all - to replace files

remove floppy disk from drive then reboot system
