Circling a word in Word 2003

You can use the Drawing tool.
draw a circle right click on the circle and Send it Back
of the text.

If you don't insist on a circle (ellipse), which would have to be a drawing
object, you can put a rectangle around a word by using a border. Select the
word and go to Format | Borders and Shading. Make sure "Apply to" is set to
"Text," and click on "Box."
