Choosing a sound card

I am looking for a sound card for a system I
want to build over this winter.

I was hoping to go with a newer interface
such as pci express, or ??? because the board
I have now is the older pci design, and I noticed
new boards either have only one or none
of the older pci slots. Besides If I am building new,
I would prefer newer designs and not older.
(trying to futureproof the best I can)

Can anyone suggest a good sound card that
keeps it's drivers up to date that would be a good
choice for the newer boards coming out ?
(does not need to be from creative labs)

I do not have a home theater system hooked up
to my computer, I just have a 2 speaker system.
But I do video capture, so good sound recording
options will be important to me. I have never had any
good experiences with the onboard sound chips.
Although some folks recommend them.

Please help me to choose a nice modern
soundcard that has options for easy audio
capture, and good driver support.

I have to Say a good word for old the and respected Turtle Beach group. For
our systems the Riviera is a great choice. It has good support software for
easy install. It is inexpensive. It has growing room for you from stereo to
Quad (4 speakers) to 5.1 Surround to SPDIF(digital 5.1).
The PCI x slots are use for high speed video. Standard PCI is more that fast
enough for good audio.

Turtle Beach can eat me. I've been burned not once but twice
by those bastards. Spent > $500 for a TB Pinnacle, which I
bought brand new from them when Win2000 was released.
They dropped driver support for the card in Win2000. Then
I plunked down another $150 for a TB Santa Cruz, when
WinXP was released. TB dropped driver support for that
card as well, and haven't released a driver for it since 2003.

A friend has an Emu 0404 on his home PC. He uses it for music production
and for £60 he thinks it's excellent value for money.

It looks like most of the MoBos have 5.1 or better integrated sound.
That should save you $ to get a faster CPU.

If you plan on installing Vista as your new OS, then you may have a problem
because Vista audio drivers for soundcards are not working well due to
design decisions Microsoft made when designing their new "improved" OS known
as Vista.

Don't talk about Vista! It serves a very useful function. It lets us
