Choice of backup software

When I bought my new computer running Vista Home Premium, I also bought an
external hard drive for backing up. That drive came with its own backup
software --Retrospect 7.5 by EMC. I assumed that's what I should use but now
learn that they haven't issued a driver compatible with Vista. I now see
that Vista has its own backup software. Is there any reason I shouldn't use
the Vista backup software and just forget about Retrospect?

Personally, I like the updated backup utilities in Vista. I would recommend it.

Western Digital for some time has been including Retrospect software -
unfortunately it is the "light" version with limited capability.
The backup utility provided with Home Premium provides for backing and
restoring files and folders - it does not do a "complete" backup (image
backup) of the computer for disaster recovery.
Vista's "Complete PC Backup" utility is not included with Home Basic or
Premium.

Acronis "True Image" 10. Works well with Vista. Use it now.

Acronis TI has too many restrictions under Vista now. So I've chosen
Paragon Drive Backup - http://www.drive-backup.com

Note: I have Vista x32 and Paragon's solution works fine with it, but
as far as I know Vista x64 isn't supported yet.

Exactly what restriction are you referring to? I'm not aware of any, and TI
works fine here.

Also curious about the "restrictions" - works fine here!

OK "too many" is overstatement :) There wasn't hot backup under Vista
(except VSS) in trial I've tried, so it's very bad for me. Also, I
tried Acronis on my newest hardware and TI couldn't detect it, but
Paragon did (not only under Vista).

I also checked Microsoft's site before purchasing and didn't find
Acronis in "work with Vista" list. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/933305

That's why I've chosen Drive Backup.

Restrictions? Such as? I use it and it works well. I have even had to
restore my Vista twice already and it worked perfectly doing that.

Given that I havent heard the term "hot backup" before, just what the heck
does that mean? I can backup and restore anything on any Windows machine
including Vista (havent got access to a 64bit edition). Mine backs up auto,
I can make it do it manually, does incrementally etc. What is the problem
there for you?
