CHKDSK

Today, for the first time ever, to my knowledge, when I turned my computer
on, it went into a routine that I've never seen before.

Checking file system on C
Type of file system is NTFS
Volume is dirty
CHKDSK is verifying files
File verification complete
CHKDSK is verifying indexes
Deleting index... something ;like BES .DI. dilbert

and then some more deleting that came and went before I could copy it down!

I assume this is something that was supposed to get fixed, rather than a
virus taking over. Pls advise.

Thanks

That is usually nothing to worry about. CHKDSK is a Microsoft utility which verifies the integrity of files on your hard disk. It automatically starts if the computer was improperly shut down in the past

What you are describing sounds more like scandisk, not CHKDSK. I think I
would have noticed my computer going into this 3 minute "on screen" routine
before, if it had happened every time my computer was improperly shutdown,
which is about once-a-week.

Though I suspect this was, indeed, a good thing, is there anything I should
be wary of, given that it occurred?

Thanks,
G
