chkdsk Will Not Run at Startup

From the command prompt I give the command:

chkdsk c: /f

and when asked if I want to run chkdsk the next time the system restarts, I
say yes, but chkdsk never runs when the system restarts.

I have been searching the web for answers to this problem and I have already
tried a number of things that have been suggested in various places:

1. Turning off services -- McAfee anti-virus, Acronis disk backup, autoupdate
2. Sheduling chkdsk and then rebooting in diagnostic mode
3. Giving the command chkntfs /d before the chkdsk command

None of these works. Also, I don't have any programs running that have been
cited as causing a problem with chkdsk at startup--Zone Alarm, etc.

Can someone please assist me with this. Getting a utility as basic as this
to run seems like it should be a simple thing.

I am running Windows XP Professional.

Thanks.

Remember that CHKDSK would run before Windows GUI mode (early in the startup processes).

It may well be, that you have another program that is complicating
this----maybe a Symantec/Norton disk-check, Goback, etc.

In any event, the next time you are in Windows (even if you have to use
Safe Mode), go to a *command prompt* and type
CHKNTFS C:

Look at results. To *clear* the chkdsk from the schedule, type
CHKNTFS C: /D

Let me suggest an alternative method of running CHKDSK --- use the
Recovery Console environment, then run CHKDSK from there.
Let me also suggest that you *install* the Recovery Console as a
*bootup* option on your system. That way you will not need the XP CD
each time.
Obviously, you do need the XP CD (hopefully you have a full XP CD [not a system recovery CD] )
from which to do initial install.

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console for Windows XP

I use CHKDSK /P from the Recovery Console ---as I need to use it.
Then use EXIT to finish the Recovery Console. The system reboots. Then you can pick XP and
return to normal usage of XP.
