XP Pro. I am getting the error " c:\owner\local settings\temporary internet
files\content.ie5\index.dat is corrupt or unreadable. Please run chkdsk
utility". Chkdsk did not repair. The computer seems to run fine except this
error pops up every once in a while. Is there a way to repair this?

Use chkdsk /f

chkdsk will run on your next boot and fix the problem.

Hi Mike - You can try just deleting it. It will then be re-created,
hopefully not corrupted, on your next reboot. You'll need a special program
to do this, however, since it's normally 'in use'. There are a wide variety
of free ones available - just do a Google on "index.dat" - or you can try:

A program called Copylock, here,
http://noeld.com/programs.asp?cat=misc#CopyLock can aid in the process of
"replacing, moving, renaming or deleting one or many files which are
currently in use (e.g. system files like comctl32.dll, or virus/trojan
files.)" Another is Killbox, here:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip
A third which is a bit different but often useful is Delete Invalid File,
here: http://www.purgeie.com/delinv.htm which handles invalid/UNC
file/folder name deleting, rather than the in use problem
