chkdsk hangs during file data verify

I scheduled a chkdsk run, which ran until reaching 14% of Stage 4 of 5, file
verify. Is memory failure indicated? If I attempt to boot without
completing chkdsk, chkdsk runs again, then hangs at the same place. How do I
boot without chkdsk?
