Chkdsk deleting system files

I was running a long needed windows upgrade on one of my computers, the
drive hasn't been defragged in a long time, and after downloading some
updates and rebooting, chkdsk starts deleting *.dll files from the
system directory.

The system no longer boots normally, only in safe mode, where I guess
those dlls aren't required, is there some good way to solve this
without formating and installing over/repairing(version on disc is
newer, and i don't know that dll's are missing, i just get bsod on
startup).

I have one idea of uninstalling every single xp update/patch, but there
are just so many of them that I'd check if there was another way first.


Also, is there a way to change what drive the windowsupdate will store
the files before installing them? Stupid as I was when I created the
partition I made it way to small, but I am in no mood for a format.

Your problem is probably some driver that won't run in XP. (Some driver written for the old OS) I suggest a bootlog for the safe
mode boot. Press F8 during restart, to choose the bootlog option on that menu, and look in the %windir% for the NTBTLOG.TXT. This
should show you exactly what driver is loading/failing and causing the safe mode. I would pull that device, and try a regular boot.
(rightclick driver file, and Properties, to see the maker of the driver file.)
