CHKDSK (and Disk Doctor) freezes at Checking Indexes

I'm on Windows XP Pro w/ 2 Serial ATA 250 Gb drives, both NTFS. Both Norton
Disk Doctor and the Windows XP CHKDSK stop working and freeze the PC at 22%
of the "Checking Indexes" part of the diagnostics. I have used many
varities of the /f switch and other switches for the XP utility, and
unchecking "automatically fix" w/ Norton's version. Trying it from the
Recovery Console also doesn't help. It always stops and freezes at the
Checking Indexes part. I notice that the activity light on the box flickers
during the successful parts of the diagnostics, then stays on steady for a
second right before the freeze at 22 percent of the Checking Indexes part.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Any help would be appreciated, and thanks.

Boot from the XP CD and go to the first REPAIR option you see and run chkdsk
/r from within there. Chkdsk from within Windows doesn't work right.
