checking e-mail

ok, on the welcome screen of your computer, where it shows the accounts and
you type in your password and sign in, on my account it says alex (my account
name) has 1 unread mail message, its been there for awhile and i think its
this important message but i dont know how to check it, how do i?

Need more information. What client do you use for sending/receiving
e-mail (Outlook, Outlook Express, web client, etc.)? Is this a new PC?
Have you sent/received e-mail on this PC before? Who is your ISP?

i have outlook 2003, its not a new pc, and i have sent an recieved email but not like this before
 
I think you mean the Today screen from Outlook.
This particular forum doesn't cover Outlook.
Try the newsgroup microsoft.public.outlook.general.
