CheckDisk and recovery data of HD. HELP ME!

R

Hello,

How can I recover all the data of the HD? Here are the symptoms:
1) The PC boots regularly, but after executing the CHECKDISK
automatically and Checking file system Files and Indexes to both
partitions C,D, it restarts automatically.
2) The C doesn't have any problem; the D drive instead makes the PC
to automatically reboot.

Surely there is a problem with the HD because the power went off when
the PC was shutting down. I have already tried to FIX the BOOT sector
via DOS, but the problem persists.

Could you please help me out to at least recover the precious data on D
drive? Or please suggest me any freeware/ shareware software?

Thanks in advance.

Depends on what the problem is.

How many physical hard drives in that system ?

What does the event log say about why its rebooting ?

Likely.

I wouldnt risk it if the data really is precious and you clearly dont have backups.

First of all thanks for your answer.

I have only 1 physical HD with 2 partitions.
I don't know how to set an EVENT LOG because I can't start WINDOWS.
Do you have any other idea? I might buy another HD and install a new
windows, but I am scared that when I will connect the old HD will
recognise the problems with the CHECKDISK will reboot automatically
again.

Thanks
Manuek

Instead of booting to Windows, boot to a CD containing
a partition managent tool, then hide the second partition.

Reboot to Windows with the second partition hidden,
and hope Windows could boot up.

P.S. partition managent tool, e.g. Acrons Disk Director (DD),
which can generate a bootable CD with DD embedded.

OK, it wasnt clear if you meant partitions or drives.

You dont have to do anything, XP will write the
event log regardless as long as it gets into the boot.

That is still what you should be doing first.

The event log should give you some indication on that.

You can in fact disable the reboot on serious problems.

I'd run Everest on that drive, from the new install,
and see how bad the drive is from the SMART report.

You dont want to try too much with that drive until
you know how bad it is if the data is critical.

Hello Rod,
I have download a diagnostic software from SEAGATE and here is the list
of the problems.

One or more errors were found in the index
One or more error were found in metadata file records

Do you know what is the best way to fix it?
Thanks

I'd do what you proposed, put it in another system as the
slave or with a clean install of XP on a new drive, and then
check the basic drive health with the everest smart report.
Post the Everest SMART report here.

If the drive looks fine, I'd use Easy Recovery Pro to get the important files off it.

If there is precious data, then quick mucking with the drive. Put it into
another machine and recover the data and make some backups of it. Then
manually run chkdsk /f on it's partitions from the other machine.

You never say what happens when you interrupt the chkdsk process. Does it
still reboot? Have you let it do the complete chkdsk process or have you
been interrupting it each time? Have you tried booting into safe mode?
