Check spelling where there are unknown letters

It's an interesting idea, probably useful for crossword puzzle
solvers. It isn't in Word, though, nor is it likely to be added
because it's too specialized.

You could try typing the "words" with nonsense characters in the
unknown spots, and see what suggestions the spell checker returns. At
least some of them may match the pattern you want.

The ability to do this was a part of WordPerfect 10+ years ago. I used to use
this ability on a 286. Does this not mean that it would be pretty simple to
incorporate in Word? Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried using * and -
but they do not work. And, yes you are correct; I did sometimes use it in
cryptics.

I agree that it would be possible to include this feature in Word. As
I'm not a member of the Office development team -- nor even a
Microsoft employee -- I have no idea how simple or complicated it
would be.

The pertinent question, though, is the business case: Would including
the feature be attractive to enough prospective users to increase
sales, justifying the development expense and adding to what many
people feel is a product already overburdened with obscure features?
