Check disk

Upon starting Windows XP the check disk function gets activated and states
that it is checking a disk for consistency. It goes through 58 percent of
the scan and moves on to another screen that disappears within a fraction of
a second. The system then reboots and repeats the process until such time
that check disk is manually bypassed by clicking on a key within 10 seconds
of check disk being activated. Any ideas on what's causing this/remedies?

Firstly make sure there is a full and complete backup of important data.
Running chkdsk, in some circumstances, can actually cause data corruption
and loss.

With the data backed up, here are some things to try.

1. Run chkdsk from the recovery console.
How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654/en-us

The command to use would be chkdsk C: /r
Substitute for C: the letter of the drive needing to be checked.
This can take some time. The /r switch tells it to check for errors and
check each sector to see if it's readable.

2. Download a drive diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's
web site. That will create a bootable floppy or CD. Boot from that and run
the diagnostics.

3. See Kelly's site for tips.

Click on "C" and scroll to "Check Disk - Disk Checking Runs Upon Boot"
