I've had this computer for almost 2 years and was told to
only use the option: Scan for and attempt recovery of bad
sectors. Now I read somewhere that I should also
choose, once in a while, the option: Automatically fix
file system errors. I did that but after 5 hours I still
had the page: Automatically fixing file..... Is it
possible that it takes so long????? Is there something
wrong with my driver? Help me please

If this chkdsk.exe is still running, cancel it by ctrl-alt-delete key.
Because it was interupted by this, it might recognize to restart the check
disk at next reboot. If it doesn't restart the check disk, I would run
another chkdsk to see if it hangs again.

I also recommend Well, I would download dignostic utility from your hard
drive manufacturer and run it. If you don't know the manufacturer of the
hard drives name and hard drive number/name Open up help and support and
search for "using device manager" Open the + for disk drives. That will have
the manafacturer and device Search the internet with that info and download
the dignostic utility.

I'm not saying you have hard disk problems. It just pays to download this
and have it available before you have a problem.

Thank you Larry, will do

Larry, I opened the + for disk drives and this is the

Search and there's a lot of different web sites with
forums...systems check etc... but no where does it
mention a download for diagnostic utility...can you help
me a little more pleaaaaase >-----Original Message-----

OK I found it. But the only reason I think I might have
problems with my hardrive is because of hanging on Check
disk "Automatically fix file system errors". I had never
used that option in the two years I have this computer I
only used "Search for and attempt...." Could that be the
reason for taking so long? How long does it normally take
to scan for that. It's the only problem I
have...computer works perfectly...never freezes of slows
down. Your help is much appreciated.

Yes, Clo........it can take quite some time for CheckDisk to check a
drive & attempt to fix errors, depending on the size of the drive. My
40 GB drive can take up to an hour or more, if I haven't run CheckDisk
for a month or two. I usually run it with both options checked, too.

If you are really concerned about your drive (or even just curious), you
can read about & download Western Digital's utility for checking the
drive for it's eminant demise. I believe I found these utilities on
their Downloads tab. Good luck.
