Cheap Printer Recommendation

Hi,

After two years, her Xerox Docuprint M750's color printhead seems to have
gone bad. Magenta won't print, so neither will any color that depends
upon magenta print. I've run the clean process many, many times, but it
won't fix the problem anymore.

I'm wondering about ordering a replacement color printhead from Xerox,
which runs $40 plus shipping, or getting a new, cheap printer. It's used
for school, so it doesn't have to have all the bells and whistles. The
M750 was great for her.

I'm thinking about getting her a new, but cheap printer. I have a
problem though. My daugher's machine runs Win98 first edition (FE) and
has no USB port. I'd like to get the Epson C84, which is $100 less a $20
rebate, and it has individual ink tanks. This printer has a parallel
interface, which I need. But, the manufacturer's site is ambiguous as to
whether or not it will run on Win98 FE, or if it requires Win98SE. One
location says Win98FE, an other says Win98SE.

Question: Do any of you run an Espon C84 on Win98FE, with the parallel
interface?

Question: Anyone have a suggestion for a cheap printer that runs on
Win98FE, parallel interface, with individual ink tanks?

There's a new machine in the future for my daughter, but not at this
time.

I got through to a live technician at Epson. He says that while he can't
verify that it will work with Win98FE, his specs do state that it works
with Win95, so he suspects that it will also work with Win98FE.

Did you check out for Canon i550 (or i560 now) ? It has individual ink tanks
and works great. Cheap ink, great finish.
Also if W98 runs OK on your machine, so it will W98 SE and as i remember,
upgrade was (is?) free if you owe W 98 FE. And in SE there were some
improvements so in my opinion it worked better than FE. So, think it this
way, too.

But first, no matter what printer - before you buy it, check out prices of
cartridges. There are cheap printers on the market with bloddy high ink
price... (like Lexmark). And this is far more important than getting cheap
printer and pay a fortune for ink later on...

Good recommendations. I checked on the i560 and the i860. It looks like
the difference is that that i860 uses one more ink tank.

Good recommendations. I checked on the i560 and the i860. It looks

And 860 prints better photos. Also 860 has smaller black ink tank than 560.
But, 560 can print just nice photos, if you don't need them daily.

Well, SE is a $90 'upgrade'. It's not free.

That's strange...back then i've had W98 FE. When SE came out, i called local
MS, they said upgrade is free if i can prove i have legal W98 FE. I sent
them a copy of my receipt and i've got a CDR with W98 SE, which doesn't even
require serial. Also can be installed directly, without W98FE CD. Funny is,
though, that i've got CDR, not pressed CD...

Yep. I always check out cartridge prices, too.

In any case, i think Canon is the way to go, and if you need it as you say,
go for 560 unless you can get 860 for good price.

Pound for pound the cannon is your best buy. I would look for the
cannon I-850, priced under a 100 dollars. The quality is super and the
printer is quiet.

I bought an i560 last night at Office Depot for $128 less a $30 Canon mail-
in rebate. I didn't have time to install it last night, but I did take it
out of the box and read the materials. It does indeed look like a very
nice printer for the price. I think it will fit the bill perfectly, and I
was anxious to try out a Canon. I hope to install it tonight. (The i860
was $148 and didn't have a rebate.)


You got me thinking about the Win98SE upgrade, so I did a search. You may

You're correct about Win98SE being an upgrade to Win98FE. I don't know why
I was so sure that it wasn't. Perhaps I was thinking that Win98FE/SE is
not a free upgrade to Win95. I remember reading on the Microsoft
newsgroups where Win95 users continually asked where on the Mircrosoft site
they could find the Win98 upgrade for download. The Microsoft MVPs always
replied that it was not a free upgrade.

I re-learn something new everyday!

P.S. There was a description on the i560 box of something called Web
Print, that is used with Microsoft IE 5.5 and above. It sounded like it
was an ad-in to IE. It said that it automatically sets a web page to print
in full on a sheet of paper instead of sometimes having the right side cut
off. It eliminated the need to use the landscape setting. Does this work?

Just follow instructions carefully and you'll be fine. (basically: printer
must be trune off and USB disconnected, then run setup, when it tells you,
connect printer and wait).
And once when you'll have time and money, buy some glossy paper and print a
photo. You'll be surprised on quality.
and one thing more: Canon's carts are easiest to refill, if you choose to do
so...

I saw that but never tried, so i can't tell you anything about it. Sorry.
