"Charts Gallery File does not exist" message

I am trying to save chart templates (i.e., user defined charts).
However, as soon as I hit "add" i get the error message:

"microsoft excel cannot save the user defined chart b/c the chart
gallery does not exist or is currently in use. Click ok, then change
the gallery file name or location before you save."

Does anyone happen to know what I need to do to avoid this problem?
Thanks!

Which version of Excel?

Sounds like 2003 or earlier but not sure.

I won't be much help if 2007

With your workbook open and after you have clicked on Custom Types

Alt + F11 to open VBE

You should have two files showing.

XLUSRGAL.XLS and XL8GALRY.XLS

The former is the user-defined storage file.

Do you have these files?
