i have unprotected a sheet and i can change the format data properties on
some of the charts but other charts have the option disabled. in the past i
could modify all charts by unprotecting sheet. how do i get the chart back
into edit mode

Hi Bob -

It is possible to protect a chart even when its parent worksheet is
unprotected, but you need to do it in VBA. Press Alt-F11 to open the VB
Editor, then press Ctrl-G to open the Immediate window, which lets you
enter VBA command lines. Alt-Tab back to Excel and select the chart,
then Alt-Tab to the VBE, type this line to unprotect the chart:

activechart.protectformatting = false

(or true to protect it), and press Enter. There are a few other aspects
of a chart besides its formatting that can be protected:

..protectselection ' prevents selection of the chart or its elements
..protectdata ' prevents editing of series formulas
..protectcontents ' protects the entire chart (chart sheets only)
..protectdrawingobjects ' what it says (chart sheets only)
