chart axis formatting change

In Excel 97 I could take the following data and make a line chart that
would allow me to format the x-axis as date and time and be able to
space out the text enough to read it. With the change over to Excel
2000+ this has changed and it no longer works; the scale option on
format axis is greyed out. For a while I was able to do a x-y scatter
chart and get it to work that way. Apparently one of the automatic
updates has fouled that up. Is there a way to get the charts to print
date and time on the x-axis and still be able to format the scale so
it's readable?

Date Time A B C D E LS
US
6/25/2006 22:00:00 67.95 68.05 68 68.55 68.05 67 69
6/25/2006 23:00:00 67.95 68.1 68.05 68.45 68 67 69
6/26/2006 0:00:00 67.95 68.1 67.95 68.35 67.85 67 69

Failing that, is there a way to get Excel 97 to run properly on XP?

I had not trouble making a Line chart of your data in XL 2003. The Date and
Time showed up a on the axis one over the other (wrapped text). But I must
point out that I did a copy form the email to Excel and since I use Canadian
date format, all your date column was treated as text.
best wishes

It will make a chart showing the date for a few rows as I have
included. The more rows you add the more compacted the text becomes and
it is soon unreadable. The format axis/scale selection is greyed out
and unusable. Some of my charts cover several thousand rows so this
function is a must for intelligible data. What I need is an alternative
now that both the line chart and the x-y chart won't handle the data
properly.
