chart 2 columns Excel shows a category graph

whenever I chart 2 columns (as a line graph,say), Excel shows a category
graph, with 2 lines. I want the 1st col as X & 2nd as Y.... what settings do
I have wrong?

You will need to choose the XY scatter graph instead of the line graph.

Select the two columns and create a chart.
Right click on your chart>Chart Type...
Choose XY Scatter.
