Using character map for the german umlaut on a, e, and u.use the keystrokes
as shown eg. alt+0252 for the letter u with umlaut but get a symbol of a
smiling face.any ideas appreciated.Thankyou.

Load a "Dutch" keyboard, switch between US keyboard and Dutch keyboard with
[Alt]+[Shift]. On the Dutch keyboard the " , ' , ` , ^ are silent, which
means when pressed they do not advance to the next character, they wait for
the next character to be depressed like the "a" for example and then create
the a-umlaut, like ä , ö , ë . The same goes for french characters é , á or
à , è and so forth. I can never remember all the ASCII numbers for all the
different special characters.
Good luck and let me know if this works for you.
Bye, Dolphe
