Changing the pictures on icons identifying file types

Dear all
Please can you help me. We have recently made a clean start and reinstalled
Windows, and have found that the icons for our photos and other images don't
look the same as they used to. My wife is keen to have the pictures she was
familiar with, so I want to change the pictures on the icons that show which
files are .jpg, which are .tif etc.
If I go to Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types and right
click on one of the Extensions, say JPG, then click on Advanced > Change
Icon, I get a very limited choice of pictures.
Some time ago I found a place where there was a big range of pictures to
choose from, but now I can't find it.
I am running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2. I have noticed on other
threads a reference to Photoshop interfering with icon pictures. I am running
Photoshop Elements 2.0 - could that be the cause of the limited choice?
Please can you advise me how to get to the bigger choice that I've seen
before?
TIA and regards,
Mike Whitehead

I think Photoshop is probably the culprit. Anyway, you can find a great
store of icons on your PC using "Start/Search". Type *.ico and let Windows
find all your icons. Be warned, there are hundreds of them but you will
find many in single folders which you can search later.

Hope this helps.

Mike,

Browse through these DLLs in the Icon picker dialog:

- Shell32.dll
- Moricons.dll
- Shimgvw.dll
- and others...

Additional note from Wesley Vogel.

[[If you click Change Icon, and there are no icons available, use the
Browse button to find Shell32.dll:
1.. Right-click the shortcut you created, click Properties, and then
click Change Icon.
2.. Click Browse, type %systemroot%\system32\shell32.dll in the File
name box, click
Open, click the icon you want to use, click OK, and then click OK.]]

Dear Ed

Many thanks for your prompt reply. Yes you are right - in the Readme for
Photoshop I found this statement -
"File Icons - Files Associations manually configured in Windows to open with
Photoshop Elements (not configured in the File Association Manager or the
Photoshop Elements installer) will show generic Photoshop Elements icons."

And I'll certainly try out your other suggestion.
