Changing the owner

I have a PC that is setup for a particular user. This means that every time
you add a program it defaults to this user.

The user has now left the company. How can I change the owner to the new
user without having to re-install Windows?

With Regedit, search for the string RegisteredOwner. The company
affiliation is stored in the value for RegisteredOrganization.

No. The owner's name was entered at Windows install time and
it pops up every time a new program is installed. As R McCarty
says, the information must be changed in the registry.

I think, on every installation I've ever done with Windows, I've supplied
the following:

Your Name: Your Name Here
Your Company: Your Company Name Here

This is correct, and to change it you can follow
R. McCarty's recipe.

To fix the "Registered to" information for WinNT/2K/XP, you can use
Start > Run > Regedit.exe to edit:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\RegisteredOwner

and:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\RegisteredOrganization

How this will affect the name displayed in previously installed
applications will vary depending upon each individual program; some read
the registered owner information dynamically, while others read it only
during installation, and some require the information to be entered
manually (typed in) by the installing individual.
