Changing text color of icons on desktop

That's what I did, which has caused the problem. The background was dark,
which made the white text okay. Yesterday I changed the background a picture
of my grandchildren with a ligh gray background. Now the white text is hard
to see.

You have a few choices then. In "System Properties" go to Advanced,
Performance settings and Uncheck Use drop shadows for icon labels. Or
use a picture with a darker or lighter background, Or move the icons
around to locations where the text shows better. Or search google for a
3rd party software that allows you to "change" the colors. (please be
aware that there may be some undesired side effects, but that's for you
to decide)

Bob, doing what you suggested gave me a background for each icon on my
desktop that was a different color than the desktop background, but the text
was black like I wanted it. So I changed the background of the icons to
match the background of the desktop and got the desired result. Thanks for
your help.
