changing row and column indicators

My columns used to be alpha and now they are numeric. How dd this happen
and, more importantly, how do I change it back?
 
Go to Tools/Options/General and uncheck the R1C1 reference
setting.

Tools>Options>General

Uncheck "R1C1 reference style" to get your letters back.

How did it happen? Most likely user accidentally changed setting.
