where do I go to change my restrictanonymous registry? Sorry, not very admin
savvy when it comes to computers.
It would appear that it needs to change to zero to enable me to access/view
my home network workgroup, (based on the queries i've read in the workgroup
to date).

I have two laptops&one desktop on a home network, all have internet access
via the router but the latest laptop on XP pro (others on XP home) cannot
view the other pc&laptop. (There is no prob with the other two)

The desktop is ethernet, the laptops wireless and I used the wizard to set
up the network. Any help appreciated, especially

Run the registry editor (Start | Run | regedit) and open this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

If "restrictanonymous" is present, set it to 0. If it's not present,
create it as a DWORD value. Then reboot.

thks steve

It was actually set to 0, so I still have the same problem unfortunately.
Do you know of any other possible reasons for it not allowing access to the
home network? It's a new laptop with factory settings, so wouldn't think
it'd be anything major.

You're welcome, Vic. What exactly happens when you try to view the
other computers from the new laptop? What does the error message say?

Can the other computers view the new laptop?

Can the new laptop ping the other computers, by computer name and by
IP address?

Error mssge is MY NETWORK PLACES "vic (name of wrkgrp) is not accessible,
you might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact
administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. The
list of servers is not currently available"

No, I cannot see this laptop on the other laptop or desktop.

How do I ping the other computers? is it in start run then do I type ping

No, I cannot see this laptop on the other laptop or desktop.

How do I ping the other computers? is it in start run then do I type ping

Open a command prompt window (Start | Run | cmd), then type the ping
commands. To ping another computer by name:

ping computer (substitute the actual name)

To ping another computer by IP address:

ping w.x.y.z (substitute the actual IP address)

Try pinging the other computers from this one, and try pinging this
one from the other computers.

Hi again

This laptop (tosh t100) is pinging the other wireless laptop ok, but is not
recognising the desktop(ethernet cable). So there's a connection issue with
that one for some reason.
I'm probably best to bite the bullet and ph microsoft here locally (nz)
unless you can think of any other reasons why?
Thks

For the record, it was a Norton Internet Security Issue ( Even though I had
the firewall de-activated)
I had to uninstall N.I.S. on all computers to get the home network going,
then re-installed NIS with no problems since.
Wouldn'tve believed NIS would interfere if the firewall was not activated
but there you have it.

Congratulations on solving the problem, Vic, and thanks for reporting
the solution. I've seen many strange network problems solved by
un-installing Norton Internet Security.

A good way to see if NIS (or another software firewall) is causing the
problem is to start the computer in "Safe mode with networking". If
things work in that mode but not in regular mode, it indicates that a
startup program is the culprit.
