I bought this computer from a family member and would
like to change the name under registered owner and get
rid of their user acount. Can I do this without re-
installing windows? thanks for any help!

Open the registry editor (Start>Run key in regedit and click on OK or hit
ENTER) and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows NT>CurrentVersion

In the right-hand pane, double-click on RegisteredOrganizaion. In Value data
field, key in the name that you want, then click on OK.

In the right-hand pane, double-click on RegisteredOwner. In Value data
field, key in the name that you want, then click on OK.

Exit the registry editor (File>Exit)

Hi,

The only way to rename Doc and Settings, etc...is to create another profile.
If you are already comfortable there, copy the profile. More info here:

As per the rest:

Change Registered Owner and Organization (Line 7)

Change Computer Name (Line 109)

Change My Computer Name to User Name (Line 131)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

For Office XP:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Installer\Userdata\SID\Products\GUID\InstallProperties

In the left pane change: RegOwner and RegCompany

Once done, naviagate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\UserInfo

And rename it: OldUserInfo

Once done navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Data and delete the
Data subkey in the left pane.

Greetings --

To fix the "Registered to" information for WinNT/2K/XP, you can use
Start > Run > Regedit.exe to edit:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\RegisteredOwner

and:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\RegisteredOrganization

How this will affect the name displayed in previously installed
applications will vary depending upon each individual program; some
read the registered owner information dynamically, while others read
it only during installation.

Changing a PC's RegisteredOwner or RegisteredOrganization in the
registry and as displayed on the Systems Properties window, however,
will have absolutely no effect on the user accounts or the associated
user profiles.

The C:\Documents and Settings\Username folders _cannot_ be
renamed, even if the associated user account has been. So, your best
course of action would be to log on using the built-in Administrator
account, create a new user account, with the username desired. You
can then delete the old user account(s).
