Changing Read Only Attribute

Is there any reason that I can't cancel the Read Only attribute of my My
Documents folder and its subfolders?

Thanks for your help.

But when I try to sync files in those folders between my laptop and my
desktop it won't do it and it keeps on telling me that the files on the are
read only?

That's why I wanted to change the attribute, but if I can work around it
that's fine with me.

Thanks for your help so far.

The folder attribute is not relevant and has nothing to do with the
attributes of the files.

Try another tack.
I am not a network expert but I suspect you are using XP Home which
does not have the file sharing capabilities of XP Pro.

Me again.

Does the fact that there have been no replies for two weeks mean that no one
can help me?

Just to reiterate: I'm trying to synchronize files between my My Documents
folders on my desktop and laptop, but I keep on getting the message that the
files are Read Only. In other words I can't change them on one computer from
the other?

Anybody able to help... please?

I suspect the reason nobody has helped is that you started off on the
wrong tack with no information of your real problem.
Please look at your original post.
You may find many have ignored the thread because of this.
Perhaps a new post without the irrelevant mention of read-only
folders?

Here's some links to help you. It has nothing to do with folder attributes.
It may have something to do with file attributes. By far the most likely
problem is either share or NTFS permissions. You probably didn't get any
answers as your initial question was vague and doesn't have much to do with
the actual problem. The error messages that Windows displays are not that
intuitive so it's not your fault. If you are used to using file sharing in
win9x which has very little to no security then it's easy to make mistakes
with XP. Reading the following links will help you to understand how file
sharing and permissions work in XP.

Thanks to both of you for your help. I'll take your advice and read the links
supplied and then if the problem isn't solved I'll start a new clearer post.

My only question to both of you is why Windows would tell me that the files
are Read Only and therefore cannot be modified if, as youi both seem to
agree, that has really nothing to do with it.

No, I said nothing about files.

You mentioned folders being read-only before.
Now you mention files?
Which is it?
If folders, then it is irrelevant as already advised.
If files, then why can't you change the attributes?

Sorry, I meant folders. I can't change the Read Only attribute of My
Documents, although you claim that that should not really be a problem.

Because if a user doesn't have the appropriate permissions the file may
indeed appear to be read only while logged on as that user. The user would
need modify permissions in order to modify the file. You will need to either
turn off simple file sharing or if using simple file sharing make sure your
My Documents folder is not set as private and the guest account is not
disabled on both computers. My preference would be to turn off simple file
sharing. If you have different user names on both computers then you will
need to create the same accounts on both computers and give each account
modify permissions on both computer's My Documents folder. You will also
have to set the appropriate share permissions. It sounds complicated but if
you read through the previous links it's not really all that hard.

Since every folder on every Windows XP machine has the Read Only attribute
checked, this situation can hardly be a problem.
